POLKVILLE, Miss. — A large-scale law enforcement search is underway after a suspect allegedly opened fire on Smith County Sheriff’s deputies while they were attempting to serve a warrant Friday afternoon.

According to authorities, at approximately 1:45 p.m., deputies were serving a warrant in the Polkville area along Highway 13 near the fire department when the suspect reportedly retrieved a firearm and began shooting at deputies. Deputies returned fire, but the suspect fled the scene on foot into a wooded area.

The suspect has been identified as Kevin Clay Adams, who was last reported wearing a blue shirt and gray pants.

The search quickly expanded into a coordinated effort involving numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Magee Police Department, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Capitol Police, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, and several other local and state agencies.

Among those assisting in the search are Magee Police Officer Bowens and K-9 Brita, who joined officers from across the region in combing wooded areas despite the extreme summer heat.

Authorities have urged residents in the surrounding area to remain vigilant, keep their homes and vehicles locked, and immediately call 911 if they see anyone matching the suspect’s description or notice any suspicious activity.

The investigation and search remain active, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
