Thursday, August 17, 2023, Lawana Thompson was sworn in by Mayor Dale Berry as Alderman Ward 2.  The swearing in took place at the Budget hearing which was a continuation of Tuesday nights regular meeting.  Family and friends were on hand for the ceremony.

Alderman Sue Honea and Mark Grubbs, Mayor Dale Berry, Alderman Sammie Tebo, Hunter and Lawana Thompson, and Marc McMillian city attorney

Mrs. Thompson fills the position vacated by the death of Matthew Hickman.  Her term is for 2 years.  Thompson defeated Joe Worrell 43-41 in the Tuesday (08-15-2023) election.

Following the ceremony, the alderman began preliminary work on the 2024 budget.  Brett Duncan, with Charles Prince CPA, gave an overview of the 2023 budget.  According to Duncan, the city is in very good shape and a millage increase will not be required.

Mayor Dale Berry emphasized the continued need for street paving.  Street paving is one of the top priorities of the Board and Mayor.  Department heads have submitted their budget.  The Mayor encouraged department heads to rank the importance of any new request.

The next budget hearing is scheduled for Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 4:00 PM at City Hall.  The public is invited.
