CARLA McCULLOCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Mariah McGill of Pelahatchie, Mississippi was awarded the 35th annual Carla McCulloch Memorial Scholarship for Nursing in a March 31 ceremony on the campus of Hinds Community College in Raymond.

Carla’s parents, Larry and Carol Lee McCulloch, along with family and friends, established the scholarship fund in 1991. Carla, a Simpson Academy graduate, lost her life in an accident during her second semester as a nursing student at Hinds. Mr. and Mrs. McCulloch, Vinton, Virginia residents, (formerly of Simpson County) attended the majority of presentations over the years, but with the recent death of Mr. McCulloch, the Hinds staff offered to Zoom the event for family and close friends.  Mandy Graybill shared her sister’s legacy with the students and faculty, and congratulated Ms. McGill on behalf of her family.

Upon receiving the $1000.00 scholarship, Mariah shared that she had graduated from Hinds in 2023 and had been accepted into the nursing program in the fall of 2025. “I’ve always wanted a career in healthcare since I was a young girl, and receiving this award is a significant honor.”  The McCulloch family and the nursing staff at Hinds coordinated requirements based on excellent academic and character qualities, along with having a “calling” to the nursing profession.  Ms. McGill further stated, “I will do everything in my power to carry Carla’s legacy forward by pursuing my education with compassion, and by keeping a deep respect for her life and value it was created to remember.” She plans to continue her education after completing the Hinds program with a goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist.

Carla’s siblings and their families also live in Vinton, Virginia… Mandy and her husband Matt Graybill; Jay McCulloch and his wife Shannon, children Brayden and Ellie Grace. Carla’s niece, Carly Graybill, resides in Roanoke, VA. Her Aunt Robin Gaston is a Simpson County resident in the Shivers Community.
