It was a day the K4 students in Whitney Bowen’s class at Simpson Central won’t soon forget!
Former NFL standout quarterback Brett Favre visited the classroom in honor of Read Across America, taking time to read to the young students and share in the excitement of promoting literacy and a love for books.
Favre, a Mississippi native and one of the most recognizable names in football history, is known for his legendary career as quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, where he led the team to a Super Bowl victory and earned three consecutive NFL Most Valuable Player awards. A Hall of Fame athlete, Favre has long been a familiar face across the South, making his visit especially exciting for students and staff alike.
The children were thrilled to spend time with a celebrity, and excitement filled the room from the moment he arrived. While many might expect the boys to be the most starstruck by the football icon, the girls were just as delighted to meet Favre, listen to him read, and share in the special occasion.
Several students came prepared, bringing footballs, T-shirts, and other memorabilia in hopes of receiving an autograph from the former quarterback. Favre graciously signed items, posed for photos, and made sure the children felt special during his visit.
Read Across America is a nationwide initiative designed to encourage reading and celebrate the importance of literacy among children of all ages. Having a well-known public figure like Brett Favre participate made the message even more meaningful for these young learners.
For the students in Whitney Bowen’s class, the day was about much more than meeting a football legend—it was about discovering that reading can be exciting, fun, and something worth celebrating.
(Sue note: Favre was scheduled to read during the full celebration of Read Across America But, due to illness, the event was postponed until now.)
