City Board Tables Zoning Request, Approves Community Events During July Meeting
The Magee Board of Aldermen met Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall. Mayor Mark Grubbs called the meeting to order. Magee resident Gary Foster offered the opening prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Zoning Hearing Held Before Regular Meeting
Before the regular board meeting, the Board conducted a zoning hearing concerning a request from Donna Magee regarding property located at 1105 Fourth Street SE.
Mrs. Magee requested permission to rent an accessory building located on her property. The building is situated in a residential district zoned for single-family dwellings, allowing one principal residence per lot. According to information presented during the hearing, the accessory building was placed on the property in 2019, prior to changes in the city’s building code that took effect in 2020.
During the hearing, four neighboring property owners submitted a petition requesting that the Board deny the conditional use request.
Following discussion, the Board voted to table the matter to allow additional time to gather information concerning the property and applicable regulations. A special called meeting is expected to be held next week to continue the discussion.

Special Events Approved
The Board then moved into its regular meeting agenda.
Mayor Grubbs presented four special event applications, all of which were approved:
- “Kick for a Cause,” sponsored by Samantha Womack, will be held August 16 at McNair Springs.
- The Magee Chamber of Commerce Farmers Market will take place July 18 from 8:00 a.m. until noon in the Community House parking lot.
- The Simpson County First Annual Back-to-School Kickball Field Day, organized by Joseph McNair, is scheduled for August 1 at City Park.
- The Magee Chamber of Commerce License Express Mobile Station will be available August 11 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. near the Chamber office.
The Board also approved rental of the Magee Civic Center for Life Line Screening, which will be held October 29 from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Soccer Proposals Tabled
Brayden Lambert appeared before the Board requesting approval for future soccer games. Because details regarding the location and schedule have not yet been finalized, the Board tabled the request pending additional information.
Lambert also introduced the idea of converting the baseball field at McNair Springs into a soccer complex. The Board agreed to revisit the proposal once more detailed plans are available.
Resolution, Public Works Updates
A resolution concerning property cleanup was approved.
Public Works Director Tim Bray reported that the city’s pothole repair program will begin Thursday and encouraged residents to contact City Hall to report potholes needing attention. Water line repairs also continue throughout the city.
Bray presented bids for the purchase of a 4-foot by 7-foot portable trench box, an important piece of safety equipment for Public Works employees. The Board accepted the low bid of $6,190 from Consolidated Pipe & Supply of Brandon.
Engineering and Infrastructure
Forrest Dungan of Clearpoint Engineers updated the Board on several ongoing projects.
Survey crews have completed field work for the NRCS Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) erosion projects and are continuing to collect information needed for easement requirements.
Dungan also reported that the proposed Water Pumping Ordinance remains under evaluation as officials continue reviewing FOG (Fats, Oils and Grease) regulations. In addition, the Magee Airport Industrial SWPPP has been approved, and a related loan application has been submitted.
Fire Department and Building Activity
Fire Chief Buck Craft reported that the department responded to nine calls between June 11 and July 1.
The Board also received updates on local development.
Scott May has applied for building permits to construct two homes at 231 Dolly Lane and 302 Courtney Lane.
City officials reported that C&C Building, LLC, contractor for the new Domino’s restaurant, has received its city business license. Construction continues on Domino’s, while 7 Brew Coffee and Firehouse Subs are expected to open in mid-to-late August.

Zoning Director Evan Jones told the Board he continues working through legal channels to address several ongoing code enforcement issues throughout the city.
Parks, Recreation and Emergency Management
Newly appointed Parks and Recreation Director Susan Mangum addressed the Board, noting the department’s need for additional employees. She also shared optimism regarding the future of the city’s splash pad, stating that work on the facility is expected to continue this week.
Emergency Management Director John Hosey reported he is continuing to evaluate options for repairing or replacing the city’s outdoor warning siren system. Hosey said he has been working with Sentry Sirens to obtain pricing and expects to present additional information to the Board at a future meeting.
Following the completion of regular business, the Board recessed into executive session.
