A heavy downpour swept through Magee, dropping approximately four inches of rain in just two hours and causing flooding in several areas of the city.

One of the hardest-hit locations was the intersection of South Main Street and 3rd Street SE near Lee’s Doughnuts, where stormwater quickly backed up and covered the roadway.

According to Mayor Mark Grubbs, the flooding was caused by an issue related to ongoing Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) construction at the intersection.

“The contractor hired by MDOT to build a concrete box culvert didn’t cut holes in the wooden frame to allow water to flow,” Grubbs explained. “The drain became blocked, causing the water to back up. Tim and the Public Works crew used a backhoe and chain to remove the wooden form, allowing the stormwater to drain. MDOT and the contractor have been notified.”

Nearby resident Kathy Pittman watched as rising floodwaters surrounded her home, coming dangerously close to her air conditioning unit. Fortunately, the water did not enter the residence.

The storm also caused scattered power outages throughout Magee as crews worked to respond to the intense rainfall.

According to Fire Chief David Craft, a tree limb fell on a light line behind Kentucky Fried Chicken, causing the line to snap, which left many homes and businesses without electricity.  Entergy repaired the line.
