Supervisors Hear Department and Economic Development Reports

The Simpson County Board of Supervisors met Monday, October 5, 2026. Board President Wayne Womack called the meeting to order. County Administrator Charlie Welch led the prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Chancery Clerk Tim Gray presented proof of publication of the notice to contractors for sealed bids for the construction of 0.071 miles of box bridge and approaches on Highway 472. The project is identified as LSBP Project No. LSBP-64(27). Bids will be received at the Simpson County Chancery Clerk’s office until 10:30 a.m. on October 16, 2026, and will be publicly opened shortly afterward.

Tax Assessor-Collector Jamie Brewer presented several reports, including tax sales, delinquent mobile home taxes, personal property taxes, surrendered tags and the September solid-waste report. Sixty-two bad checks were recorded during September.

Justice Court Clerk Joyce Ann Hicks presented the court’s third-quarter report for July, August and September.

In July, Justice Court recorded 247 pleas, 111 trials, 126 civil cases and 133 past-due cases, for a total of 617 cases.

August included 298 pleas, 58 trials, 110 civil cases and 179 past-due cases, totaling 645.

In September, the court recorded 278 pleas, 106 trials, 168 civil cases and 78 past-due cases, for a total of 630 cases.

 

. Road Manager Jeremy Bolton gave the Road Department report.  New hire in solid waste:  Robert Siklas & Richard Abernathy.  Non CDL for $14.88 per hour.

Sheriff Paul Mullins received approval to purchase a washer and dryer for the jail from Laundry South for $19,807.49. The Board also approved the September Summit Food Services invoice of $21,446.50 and the hiring of Kalli Ritchey as a full-time certified dispatcher at $15.86 per hour.

Under County Administrator Charlie Welch, the Board approved the October 5 claims docket totaling $145,088.44 and continued the Emergency Order for Bridge Repairs. A request to replace Dena Buckley’s windshield after rocks reportedly fell from a dump truck was denied.

The Board approved an off-site computer backup agreement with HiComp at $650 per month for 36 months, along with a Virtual Tape Library server previously approved for the county’s computer system. The county also accepted a trailer valued at $2,849 from Keep Mississippi Beautiful. The trailer will be used for litter and trash removal throughout Simpson County.

Pat Brown reported that Simpson County’s employment rate is higher than last year. Work continues with the City of Magee Airport, where several grants have been approved.

Brown said the county’s reports and information for prospective industries are current, giving Simpson County the information needed when industries inquire about available opportunities. He emphasized

Health care-related businesses are the #1 employers in our county.

The former Real Pure/Niagara Bottling building contains approximately 105,000 square feet and has an estimated price of $440,000. Property adjacent to Stanley Graves on Highway 49 is also scheduled to be cleared.

Following Mr. Brown’s report, the meeting was adjourned into Executive Session per the request of Pat Brown.

Future Board of Supervisors meetings are scheduled for:

  • Thursday, October 15, 2026
  • Monday, November 2, 2026
  • Friday, November 13, 2026

County offices will be closed Wednesday, November 11, 2026, in observance of Veterans Day.
