On April 21, 2026, at approximately 9:00 a.m., the Magee Police Department responded to a reported disturbance in progress on Highway 49 South near the Pure Gas station. When officers arrived, it was determined that the individuals involved had already left the area before officers got on scene.
Unrelated to that disturbance, as officers were clearing the call, they observed a young female walking northbound on Highway 49 carrying a backpack. Officers made contact with her to check on her welfare and quickly learned she was a juvenile.
During the investigation, officers discovered she was a 14 year old runaway from Quitman, Texas, who had taken a diesel truck and was traveling to Florida to meet someone she had met online. Fortunately, after stopping for fuel, she mistakenly put gasoline into the diesel truck, causing it to break down here in Magee. That ultimately led to her being safely located and recovered by our officers.
This situation could have ended very differently, and we are thankful our officers were in the right place at the right time to help bring it to a safe outcome.
It is important to remember that something like this can happen to any family. Moments like this are a reminder of how important it is for all of us to stay aware of what our children are doing on their phones and who they may be communicating with online. Situations like this can develop quickly and become dangerous before anyone realizes it.
