The vacant lot, located at 110 Main Avenue North in Magee, has been purchased by Lacye Evans to build a two story building which will house The Lacye Evans Agency, LLC as well as allow two duplex apartments to be built on the 2nd floor of the building.

The original zoning laws allow single family living above a business but not duplex in the historical downtown section of Magee.

Lacye’s agency will occupy 1,600 square feet with two 800 square feet apartments above the business. The apartments will be accessed from the rear of the building. The apartments will each have a balcony facing Main Avenue. The loft style living in a downtown area is being enjoyed in many larger cities. Lacye informed the board that Brookhaven was a good example of a city near Magee that has taken the downtown area and developed lofts above many businesses.

Lacye explained that her Alpha Insurance Agency is now located in downtown Magee on the Corner of Main and Choctaw. “Downtown has been good to me,” Lacye said, “and I would like to give back to the downtown area.” As a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, Lacye is aware of the Chamber’s promotion of downtown Magee. She felt building a new office building and bringing apartment living to downtown would entice others to join the movement.

Plans are to begin work on the building within the next month.

The Special Exception (Conditional Use) was unanimously passed by the Zoning Commission.

Members of the Zoning Commission are: James Peden, Diane McPhail, Robert May, Sue Honea, Jim Ball, Bill Caughman, and Arthur Milton. The members are appointed by the Aldermen and Mayor.
