WHY?
As I study this week’s Sunday school lesson from Habakkuk, the prophet saw evil flourishing, innocent children suffering and dying, Christians persecuted and killed for their faith, and he ask God “Why?” We ask that same question today as human life has no value, simple disagreements turn into murders, and an entire generation is being lost to drugs.
I was reminded of the verse from II Timothy that spoke of “Lovers of pleasure”. We have more money, more things, and more leisure time that at any time in our history. We have become obsessed with leisure activities! We have family reunions, ballgames, boating, vacations, fishing, and all manner of activities that take us away from worshiping God! We are losing the foundations of faith that our families and our nation desperately need! How many people involved in these activities make time for regular worship? Family devotions? Study of God’s word? The scripture tells us to “forsake not the assembling of ourselves together”. There is a void in worshiping God and giving our children a foundation of faith and knowledge of God’s word. We are raising a generation without the moral compass necessary for civilized behavior. The teachings of the Bible have become “out-of date, out of touch, old fashioned, and not applicable to today’s society”. Church attendance is at an all-time low, as many think it is not necessary and it has become acceptable to take Sundays as a day for self! Is it any wonder the world is in such a mess?
II Timothy 3:1-5
“But know this that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, Traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, Having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”
