West Nile Virus
Mississippi’s 31st and 32nd reported cases of West Nile virus for the year indicate that WNV is still a concern as warm weather continues into November. Mosquitoes that carry West Nile are more active in the evenings when kids and families will be trick-or-treating this Halloween. Make sure that you and your kids are protected: long sleeves and pants (or costumes) to cover exposed skin, and a mosquito repellent containing an EPA-approved ingredient.
Zika Reminder
Remember as you make holiday travel plans that Zika virus is being actively transmitted over most of South and Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, in addition to two areas in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Zika remains a serious concern for pregnant women, whose unborn children are at risk of brain damage or stillbirth from Zika. Zika is also sexually transmitted by men and women to their partners of either sex. See full precautions and areas of transmission on our website.
