WEEDS
As I mowed the lawn before the rain came a few weeks ago, everything was dry and dusty. The grass was dead or dying, leaves were falling, and the shrubs and flowers were struggling! I had tried to keep some of my flowers alive thru regular watering but it was a struggle. As I mowed the lawn, I noticed that in the midst of the drought, the weeds were still growing. In the midst of very little water, weeds were still growing in my flower bed. The pastures had very little grass but nuisance weeds that have no nutritional value to animals still flourished! It takes hard work to maintain pastures for cattle, green grass for our lawns, and beautiful flowers.
Sin is like those weeds. I know that word Sin is not politically correct. People are uncomfortable with that word. But that is the only correct description of our problems. The scriptures have many comparisons of weeds to sin. Just as thorns, thistles and weeds are the most prolific of all vegetation, Sin needs no nurturing or care to grow in our lives. We start our lives with the best of intentions to do good and right things. We live busy lives and we become careless in our devotions, our prayer lives, and our worship. We allow the worries and troubles of life to grow like weeds until we are consumed with our troubles and we suffer a drought of the Holy Spirit in our lives! The only things that flourish during a drought are WEEDS!
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8, ESV)
“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. But that night as the workers slept, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat, and then slipped away.” (Matthew 13:24-25, NLT)
