USM Student Adamson Wins Mississippi Young Bankers Leadership Award

When he’s not taking snaps as a quarterback for The University of Southern Mississippi football team, Parker Adamson is taking formidable courses as a standout student in the College of Business.

And now the junior finance major can add another gold star to his impressive resumé as the winner of the 2015 Mississippi Young Bankers (MYB) Leadership Scholarship. This marks the fourth time in the past five years that USM has produced the MYB Leadership Scholarship recipient.

Adamson, an Oxford, Miss., native says that balancing the long hours as a member of the Golden Eagle football team with a heavy academic load requires concentration and assistance.

“Some weeks it’s hard to juggle football and my classroom responsibilities, especially during the season when we are traveling so much,” said Adamson, who maintains a 3.63 GPA. “I have had support from my professors in meeting with me when I requested more time outside of class. Our team has access to academic support and tutors, and I have taken advantage of those resources as well. I also played multiple sports in high school, so I’ve gotten used to splitting my time.”

Each year the MYB committee, a sector of the Mississippi Bankers Association, present a scholarship to an outstanding student majoring in banking and finance. The MYB Leadership Scholarship is given to a junior banking and finance major at a state-supported university. Applicants must be nominated by their banking professor.

USM finance students continue to impress in statewide scholarship competitions. Earlier this year Tanner Shaw, a senior finance major, was awarded the prestigious Orrin W. Swayze Scholarship by the Mississippi Bankers Association. The $5,000 award is presented annually to the top Magnolia State university major in banking and finance who best represents the tradition of banking excellence exemplified by Swayze, a senior officer for Trustmark until his retirement in 1967.

“On behalf of all faculty in the College of Business, I congratulate Mr. Parker Adamson for this signature accomplishment and thank the Mississippi Bankers Association for their impact on education in this field,” said Dr. Faye Gilbert, dean of the USM College of Business. “Our faculty members in finance are to be commended also for the work they do to prepare these students to excel in the world of finance and banking.”

Adamson is a backup quarterback on the Southern Miss football team and is listed as a redshirt sophomore in eligibility. He is on track to earn his bachelor’s degree in December 2016, at which time he plans to enter graduate school in pursuit of an MBA degree. He is the son of Doug and Chris Adamson of Oxford, Miss.

About the award
The Mississippi Young Bankers Leadership Scholarship has been awarded since 1998. The mission is to not only give students monetary recognition, but also encourage them to pursue banking careers in Mississippi. For more information visit www.msbankers.com
