USM Nurse Practitioner Program Earns 100 Percent Pass Rate

The College of Nursing’s Department of Advanced Practice at The University Southern Mississippi is achieving excellence in its nurse practitioner programs. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program celebrated a 100 percent pass rate from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in the 2015 calendar year.

In 2016, US News & World report ranked the USM nurse practitioner programs in the top 100 online-graduate programs in the nation; USM has the only nurse practitioner programs in the State of Mississippi to receive this ranking.

“The online programs allow flexibility for working-registered nurses and allows them to remain in their own community for their clinical experiences,” said Dr. Melanie Gilmore, associate professor and Program Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner program.

USM’s College of Nursing is transforming nursing and impacting healthcare by offering two nurse practitioner specialties areas – Family Nurse Practitioners and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. The College of Nursing also offers an avenue for current nurse practitioners to earn additional certifications.

“There is a shortage of psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners in our state,” said Dr. Abby McNeil, assistant clinical professor and Program Director of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. “I am proud to work for The College of Nursing where we provide the opportunity for nurses and current nurse practitioners to earn a certification that will make them more marketable in the current job market and provide much needed access to mental healthcare.”

The Nurse Practitioner programs at The University of Southern Mississippi prepares nurse experts in advanced practice and management for leadership in nursing and comprehensive patient-centered healthcare delivery.

These education programs include didactic work and clinical practice experience with full-time and part time options. Each student completes courses in evidenced based practice (research and statistics), ethics, role development, health care policy, and finance.
