Monday, April 25th, Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency along with Magee General Hospital teamed up to show their support to National Donate Life Month. Amy Tolliver, Magee General CEO, opened the program by welcoming everyone to the program. Dr. Joseph Blackston spoke concerning the importance of organ donation. Dr. Blackston stated a very inspiring quote, “MORA does the Lord’s work”. He also made several good points about signing up to be an organ donor like talking to your family and get a heart on your drivers license. Did you know that Mississippi leads the nation in blindess? 1500 people in Mississippi are waiting on a donor.
Organ donations include heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, and small intestine. Tissue donation includes corneas, eyes, skin, bone, tendons, ligaments, vessels, and heart valves.
Cindy McIntyre read about the importance of the green and blue balloons. Eight green balloons signified the importance of how one organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people. Two blue balloons represented the importance of tissue and eye donation.
The attendees paused to have a moment of silence to remember the 122,994 people on the waiting list today. As the balloons were released into the blue sky, we were left with one final thought: To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.
Donor recipients in attendance were Tom Royals and Liz Garner Etheridge. Tom is a recipient of a liver several years ago. Speaking with Tom today, he was smiles that he received a good report from his transplant doctor. Liz received a heart along with her sister Katie. Katie passed away several years ago. Katie left with us her strong will, determination, and wonderful memories to cherish.
Happy Donate Life Month!!
