Two Simpson County School District (SCSD) students at Mendenhall High School are two of the newest members to join the Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s (MPB) Student Council.
Tenth-grade student Xylan Cox and ninth-grade student Kaylyn Johnson will join middle and high school students from across the state to gain insight from MPB on college and career readiness and to serve as liaisons between their peers and MPB.
Led by the MPB Education Department, the Student Council was introduced last year with goals of gaining perspectives on various state and national issues from the council; pairing students with mentors for hands-on career training; helping students create a podcast; planning projects; and increasing students’ social skills.
Cox and Johnson will serve one-year terms on the Student Council but can elect to serve more if they choose. Both students make a total of four from SCSD to represent the district on the council. They now join inaugural council members Corinne Allen and Kaylen Woodard, who were eighth graders at Simpson Central School upon their selection
