Haley Tutor of Magee is a volunteer/staff member for the The Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp. The program is a wonderful opportunity for adults and children with disabilities.
The Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp has grown since the 60s through the decades, and now has three annual camp sessions, with nearly 1000 people in and out of the camp gates each year, and of those, 250 children and adults with disabilities. What’s so fun about this camp? That’s easy: we have a BLAST! There are countless outcomes as a result of the Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp, but the key goal is this: through Civitan Camp friendships are made, character is built, and lives are positively changed.
Campers have been experiencing adventures at Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp for over 50 years. Laughter echoes non-stop through the South-Mississippi woods where camp takes place for two weeks in the summer and again over a long weekend in the fall. Whether campers want to swim like fish or reel them in, glide over the water in an innertube or relax on the boat, show off their talents on stage or in arts and crafts… Civitan is the perfect place to make camp memories that will last a lifetime!
Camp Civitan has 80-90 campers. There are 75 high school counselors and 75 staff members.
Haley has been volunteering her services for years. She started in 2001 as a counselor and has only missed one year since! After her first year, she became close with one of the directors and baby sat her boys for 15 years. About 12 years ago she became the counselor coordinator for children’s week and adult week. Haley serves on the planning committee for fall camp. The group works year long to make camp happen. Haley stated “I would say most of us feel as though camp gives us more than we could ever give the children and adults with disabilities.” The blessing she receives is worth every second.
Haley is married to Peyton Tutor of Magee.
