State Treasurer Lynn Fitch’s financial education initiative, TEAM, or Treasurer’s Education About Money, continued to grow in its second year, more than doubling the number of Mississippi students who have completed the program.
“I am very excited to see that TEAM continues to grow and give more and more Mississippi students the important life skills they will need for a bright future,” said Treasurer Lynn Fitch. “Each of these children is now equipped with critical financial building blocks for success. And, when they succeed, Mississippi does, too.”
Treasurer Fitch established this public-private partnership to provide schools with the resources necessary to teach students the fundamentals of financial education. Through TEAM partner Mississippi Council for Economic Education (MCEE), teachers get professional training. TEAM partner Ever-Fi provides the online platform for use in classrooms and in students’ home studies. These resources are provided at no cost to the schools, the teachers, the students, or the families, thanks to the generous financial contributions of companies and organizations across Mississippi.
In School Year 2015-16, TEAM made the following impact:
28,605 students
305 schools
96,751 learning hours
71 Mississippi counties
260 teachers trained
“In our first year, we reached more than 19,000 students and in our second year, we experienced a 50% increase, with more than 28,500 students enrolled,” continued Treasurer Fitch. “And, in benchmark assessments, students continue to show a remarkable 92% improvement in their financial knowledge. Mississippi has ranked at the bottom in our financial habits for far too long. I’m glad that TEAM is helping to provide Mississippi’s next generation with the skills they need to change that.”
