District Attorney Matt Sullivan announces that Defendant Travis Caffie has been sentenced to fifty-five (55) years to serve incarcerated in the Mississippi State Penitentiary System.
On March 29, 2017, a twelve person Simpson County jury convicted Caffie for shooting into a dwelling, shooting into a vehicle, and two counts of aggravated assault that occurred in May 2015. The evidence presented by the District Attorney’s Office at trial proved multiple gunshots were fired into vehicles and a home on Mary Grove Church Road striking bystanders, including an eighty-nine-year-old man. Investigators recovered shell casings and projectiles from a 9mm handgun and a AK-47 assault rifle.
Circuit Judge Eddie H. Bowen presided over the sentencing hearing on May 8, 2017, in Mendenhall. District Attorney Sullivan said: “It takes hard work and time to successfully prosecute a felony trial of this magnitude. I tip my hat to Simpson County law enforcement, my staff, and the bravery of the testifying eye witnesses who worked together successfully to uphold the law.”
