An initial appearance to set bond for Tony L. Smith was held Friday, March 16, 2018 at approximately 5:45 PM. Judge Eugene Knight presided over the hearing.
Smith is charged with 3 counts: 2 counts of attempted murder and 1 count of breaking and entering.
Smith was charged with attempted murder of Gloria Lucas and Debra McCollum and the breaking and entering of Mrs. Lucas’ residence at 206 2nd Avenue SW Magee, MS (The McAlpin House).
District Attorney Matt Sullivan of the 13 District explained why Tony L. Smith should be denied bond.
Tony L Smith was charged with 4 felonies between 1986-92. He was convicted of rape and sentenced to thirty years of which he served ten plus years. Smith failed to register as a sex offender. Sullivan emphasized that Smith was a flight risk and a danger to society. Smith is a habitual drug offender and has said that when he is using drugs he is “out of his mind.” Smith has a long history of criminal offenses. The violent nature of the charges led Sullivan to recommend to Judge Knight bond be denied.
Tony L. Smith was denied bond and will be transferred to the Simpson County jail later Friday night.
An official statement from the Magee Police Department will be posted.
