When I am seated on the school board (Lord willing), I pledge to oppose any increases in your taxes. We are already overtaxed, and the school board has continued to come to the Board of Supervisors requesting the millage to be raised. To their credit, our Board of Supervisors has this year rejected their most recent request. The school board has responded by suing our Board of Supervisors which means they are suing us taxpayers! One of the first moves I plan to make when seated (Lord willing) will be to withdraw this frivolous and hateful lawsuit which the school board has brought against the people of Simpson County.
To put things in perspective, the school budget now consumes forty per cent of the county budget, but the school board continues to request more. To put things in further perspective, the school board’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2025 is $45,190,548. There are presently 2,801 students enrolled in Simpson County schools, which works out to $16,133 per student per year!
Remember also that property tax increases hurt some of our most vulnerable citizens. Property tax increases are inevitably passed on to renters because there is no homestead exemption on rental property. A property tax increase of 4% affects those who are in middle and low income brackets even more that it does a multi-millionaire. For those who are already struggling to make ends meet, even a small increase in rent can be devastating; therefore I will, by God’s grace oppose any more property tax increases.
All our lives we have heard from the education establishment that if we will just give them more money, they will do a better job. It should be evident by now that our education problems will not be solved by throwing more money at them.
Taxpayers, Thomas Ray Floyd will stand with you and for you!
I wish Thomas Ray Floyd the best. I am a Simpson County taxpayer. He will do what he says he will do and will be a good leader.
