At the Thursday, March 14, 2024, Simpson County School Board meeting, Board member Danny Cowart called out Sheriff Paul Mullins for the district not having resource officers at the schools in the county.

In the March 15, 2024 Simpson County Board of Supervisors meeting, Sheriff Mullins addressed the issue stating that this situation is “not on Paul Mullins.”

Sheriff Mullins explained to the board on steps that have and are being taken  to staff schools with resource officers.  The Sheriff department budget was set in October 2024  and as the Sheriff explained there is little wiggle room in the budget.

“We must work together and get together” to reach this goal, stated Mullins. Along with County Attorney Danny Welch, the two men are continuing to work on plans for resource officers.  The SCSD must do their part.

I have a way to where the county saves money on school officers. First of all, I think it best to do community outreach as a way for more people who want to get into law enforcement and go to schools where students have stated that they want to get into law enforcement enforcement. This way more people want to get into law enforcement and the reason why I bring this up is to use students who want to join law enforcement and put them into a program where they work for the sheriff’s office as a part-time or full-time school resource officer and the county should be the ones who set the age limit for those students. This way you can get more into law enforcement and more school resource officers and at the same time you be doing community outreach. I do think the sheriff’s office should host this and train anyone who wants to join a Program like this. This program has been used in many big and small law enforcement agencies in the United States and it saves Taxpayers and the county as it holds a lot of money and it also helps the sheriff’s office get more deputies. If you think school officers need guns? Take a look into NYPD and LAPD school officers they keep safety and law in the school just fine. All it needs is training and people who have been in this school for a bit like students who looking to join law enforcement agencies. All they need is a set of handcuffs, a teaser, and some training. It all comes at a low cost to the people. Looking for students who are willing to join you can ask the school’s official who has a pager that tells some students’ Interest in their Career path. The school does make students take a career path worksheet where they pick what career they want to go into as they do every year and I bet there are over 2 students who like to join law enforcement in this county as well. I don’t have the power to talk to any leader in the county government as I’m a student myself and I have been told by many students who like a program like this to help them get experience in law enforcement and keep the school and county safe. I think by telling you, guy you can pass the message to the school official sheriff’s office leadership, and county government leadership.
