The lovely Martinville home of Charles Ray and Claudette Cliburn was recently the setting for a birthday celebration of one of “The Martinville Five,” a group of school friends, now between the ages of 92-95, who attended classes at Martinville School and now live within a mile’s radius of one another.
Ruby Lee Lee, Claudette Cliburn’s mother, was the honored celebrant, and her four classmates met with her to enjoy a time of reflection and very interesting gossip from days gone by.
Longevity has its many aspects and rewards, but one of the most obvious lies in sharing with those who still remember the old days, and these five ladies are as razor sharp as a new Gillette blade! Ruby Lee Lee, Nevis McAlpin Womack, Dorothy Sullivan Jones, Gussie Cooper Upton Walker, and Elsie Jones Rucker have been getting together on a regular basis for several years now and always relish any opportunity to reminisce, to catch up on their respective lives, and to recount some of the happy times spent together as children there in the Martinville Community. We who were fortunate enough to have been extended an invitation to the birthday luncheon so enjoyed listening to some of their stories, to their unexpected outbursts of laughter, all while marveling at the fact that they have remained bosom chums through so many, many years of personal triumphs, tragedies, illnesses, and losses. God has spared them, and they give Him all the glory and praise.
We wish for each of them good health, happiness, and joy, and we thank them for continuing to be a source of inspiration for so many through their wonderful Christian example.
Also on hand for the celebration were Mrs. Lee’s grandson Mike Davis, and her great granddaughters Jessi and Julia Davis.
