My cousin and across the fence neighbor Miriam May died October 30, 2020 in the house she lived in all her life. She was a life time resident of Magee and a person who had a magical way with the pen.
Miriam’s life was often viewed through her pen. She was talented with words beyond the average writer. She worked many years (14) at the Jackson Daily News (later becoming the Clarion Ledger) as a feature writer and food editor.
Miriam worked in Public Relations with Millcreek and Magee General Hospital. In later years, she wrote a weekly column for the Magee Courier.
Miriam was talented in more ways than writing. She was a good artist and a very talented photographer.
Growing up by Miriam, I spent many years playing in her back yard just as she played in mine. She loved horses. As a young child I remember Miriam ridding her horse all over Magee! She kept her horse in her backyard! At that time, there was a large pasture behind her house and my grandparents home.

In earlier years, Miriam took a 6 week trip to Africa. I have several beautiful pieces she brought back from her adventure. She loved the animals and the beautiful scenery of Africa.
Sometimes, I wanted to call her the cat lady! She had cats everywhere. There were no loss of cats in our neighborhood. She fed them all. Some people will remember Miriam going every afternoon to the library, near the alley street, feeding cats! She loved animals. She loved nature. She would get so upset if anyone cut down a tree. I often through her abundance of trees and scrubs looked like a jungle…but it was her beautiful jungle.
Miriam, along with my sister Linda Montgomery and Aunt Grace Everett, composed a family cookbook “The Caughman Cookbook.” If you have one, you are lucky! Truly, “The Caughman Cookbook” is awesome. She wrote stories about each of the Caughman children as well as illustrating the book.

As I grow older, I realize even more the sadness of losing people who have always been apart of your life. Living next to me with three wild boys was not always easy for Miriam. You can imagine the noise and wild ballgames she listened to daily!
Miriam leaves behind a legacy of the written word. She will always be with us.

Sorry to hear of the loss of our cousin Miriam. I was wondering if it would be possible to acquire a copy of the cookbook.
