The Chemours Company promotes Land Conservation in Miss. with Land Donation
Over 72 acres of pristine marshland is now the property of the State of Mississippi through a land donation by The Chemours Company DeLisle site in Pass Christian. Formerly known as DuPont Delisle, Chemours donated the land for conservation and recreation purposes.
“The Chemours DeLislesite has worked closely with several State agencies since it opened in 1979 to help preserve our natural resources,” says Plant Manager Mark Smith. “We are pleased to donate this property to the State of Mississippi through the Secretary of State for preservation in its natural state.”
“Our Agency is committed to working with dedicated landowners and companies, such as Chemours, to preserve the culture of the Coast by acquiring land for our children and grandchildren to enjoy,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “This unspoiled land will be around for future generations to enjoy with this generous contribution.”
The 72.6 acres is located at the junction of the Wolf River and Bay St. Louis and adjoins the Wolf River Marsh Coastal Preserve. The Wolf River Coastal preserve is a 2,426-acre preserve containing an expansive tidal freshwater marsh. It is maintained by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and is part of the Mississippi Coastal Preserves Program.
“The State of Mississippi is fortunate to have corporate partners committed to preserving the natural resources we all share. This land donation represents a key acquisition for our coastal preserves program and one that will benefit our coastal environment for decades,” says Jamie Miller, Executive Director of the Department of Marine Resources.
“Over the years, Chemours DeLisle has donated over 700 acres of tidelands property to the State for preservation and for use by the State to enhance the quality of important eco-systems,” adds Mr. Smith. “On behalf of the over 900 people who are employed at Chemours DeLisle, said Smith, we are proud to continue to support the Secretary of State’s efforts to preserve these fragile tidelands.”
The State of Mississippi currently has title to approximately 30,000 acres of the designated 72,000 acres of crucial coastal wetland habitat within Mississippi’s 20 coastal preserve sites.
The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Coastal Preserves Program was developed in 1992 by the Wetlands Protection Act. The Coastal Preserves Programs objective is to acquire, protect, and manage sensitive coastal wetland habitats along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, ensuring the health of Mississippi’s coastal wetland ecosystems.
