A Tense Traffic Stop Leads to Felony Drug Arrest
An arrest on felony drug charges followed a tense traffic stop by Magee Police Officer Joey Shows shortly after 10:00 pm Wednesday night, April 15, 2015.
According to Magee Police Chief Randy Crawford, Officer Shows initiated a routine traffic stop investigation while patrolling near Hwy 149 and Pinola Drive, after he observed a white 2000 Mercury Marquis run a stop sign. Police reported detecting a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle as Officer Shows approached the driver, who was later identified as Todd Cemond Stubbs, 26, of Magee.
Appearing to hide or reach for something, reported officials, Stubbs kept his right hand underneath the seat, despite Officer Shows’ numerous commands to keep both hands visible. Stubbs then told Officer Shows he did have a gun under the seat, at which time, Officer Shows ordered Stubbs to place his hands in the air, although Stubbs refused. After defying multiple verbal commands, Stubbs was tased by police, and was subsequently detained and placed under arrest.
Search incident to arrest lead officers to find a Hi-Point 40 caliber pistol under the seat where Stubbs was reaching. Officers also recovered approximately 90 grams total package weight of marijuana.
Stubbs was then transported to Magee city jail and booked and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana) with Intent to Distribute While in Possession of a Firearm, DUI Other 2nd, Disregard of Traffic Device, Disorderly Conduct, and Failure to Comply.
Stubbs later appeared before Municipal Court Judge, Eugene Knight, and was given a bond in the amount of $10,000. Stubbs reportedly was out on a bond following a prior arrest on June 5, 2014 for Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance. The previous bond set for Stubbs has been revoked by Judge Knight. Stubbs will remain incarcerated until both cases appear before a Simpson County Grand Jury.
Chief Crawford commended the “work effort of Officer Shows in making this drug arrest and keeping drugs off of the streets of Magee.”
The 2000 Mercury, $206.00 in US currency, and the 40 caliber handgun was seized Magee Police Department, officials also reported.
