The Magee Fire Department responded to Roseburg Forest Products in Taylorsville on Thursday, March 10th for mutual aid @ the request of Taylorsville FD.
The ladder truck was specifically requested.
Upon arrival, a fire was located in a large (400’x90′) sawdust storage facility. The fire had been in progress for an unknown amount of time. Flames were in the upper portion of the roof support of the facility, aka bowstring truss. This type of construction is known for potential sudden catastrophic failure under fire conditions and very dangerous to firefighters.
Firefighters were restricted to exterior operations in order to minimize exposure to danger. The Magee ladder truck was utilized for firefighting by supplying an elevated master stream. A portion of the siding was removed near roof level, providing an opening to put an effective stream directly on the fire. After securing an appropriate water supply, we flowed 1000 gpm for approx 1 – 2 hrs. These efforts were successful in stopping the fire.
