The Magee Preservation Commission received a $50,000 grant from T-Mobile on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. The grant, which is one of 250 T-Mobile Hometown Grants awarded so far, will help the city revitalize the Magee Community House.
Tiffany Kinslow, Chamber of Commerce President and Chair of the Magee Preservation Commission, accepted the award on behalf of the commission, saying “The Magee Community House holds a special place in the heart of our town. Originally, Mrs. Nettie Williams generously deeded a half-block of downtown property to the City of Magee, ensuring it would always be preserved for the benefit of the community. This land became the site of the Magee Community House.”
The Community House has hosted numerous events throughout its history, including town hall meetings, farmers’ markets, social services, health fairs, quilting bees, educational seminars, garden clubs, dances, musical recitals, school performances, senior programs, and more. For many years, volunteers prepared meals for the elderly every Monday through Friday with the help of Valley Foods as a sponsor.
“Throughout the years, the Community House has been the heart of our city,” Kinslow said.
Kinslow expressed gratitude to the members of the Magee Preservation Commission for “their unwavering dedication in bringing the Community House back to the forefront and spearheading the much-needed repairs.”
Repairs to the roof of the Community House have already begun.
“A special thanks goes to Penny Aguirre,” said Kinslow, “for her persistent pursuit of securing grants and her unwavering dedication. Without her hard work and determination, this grant would not have been possible!”
Magee is one of 250 towns awarded Hometown Grants so far. Through Hometown Grants, people in communities nationwide are kickstarting projects that make a real difference and help their towns thrive. With $25 million set aside through 2026 to support Hometown Grants, T-Mobile is investing in the power of community-driven initiatives to ensure small towns can connect, innovate and grow together.
“With 250 recipients, we’ve officially hit the halfway mark with T-Mobile’s Hometown Grants, and the impact is astounding,” said Jon Freier, President, Consumer Group, T-Mobile, in a recent release. “This milestone isn’t just about communities revitalizing their towns … it’s acknowledging the ripple effect — job creation and tens of thousands of volunteer hours sparking a profound wave of positive change throughout Small Town America — and I can’t wait to see what the next half brings.”
“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to T-Mobile Hometown Grants for their generous $50,000 grant and their investment in our community,” Kinslow said. “Their support will enable us to restore the Community House to its former glory and make it a vibrant and thriving part of our community once again. We are truly grateful for this opportunity to preserve our heritage and create a brighter future for Magee. Thank you, T-Mobile, for your generous investment!”
