Simpson County Board of Supervisors approved the proposed budget for 2022-2023 at their September 15, 2022 meeting. A hearing on proposed budget and proposed tax levies for the year was held.  The budget was passed by a 3-2 vote. Supervisors Mitchell Chatman District 1, Danny Craft Supervisor District 2, and Brain Kennedy District 3 all voted in favor of the budget. Supervisors Donny Welch District 4 and Randy Moore District 5 voted against the budget.

Stan Bulger spoke on behalf of the tax increased. concerning the school’s request. Bulger asked the board to please consider the increase and do not be the first board to go against the school in the state, and not pull attention to possible national criticism. Mr. Thomas Ray Floyd spoke and asked the board not to accept the tax increase. Mr. Floyd urged the board to be the first to go against the system and challenge the law. Rev. Barnard Mitchell spoke asking the board to consider the increase. Mitchell stated he came from a consolidated school system in Newton County and knew first hand how consolidation had advantages.

Supervisor Danny Craft District 2 stated he might not approved of the law but it is that the law. By not approving the request the school district can file a short fall note by law and the county would have to pay. This would add interest to the note and possible being sued all at a burden and price to the tax payer.  Until changes are made at a higher level it is the supervisors duty to follow the law.
