Simpson County School Board met Thursday, February 14, 2019 for a special meeting to discuss the process of hiring a Superintend for the district. Michael Waldrop with the Department of Education came before the board to discuss the hiring procedures. Waldrop advised the board had two options: Appoint the superintendent that is currently serving or go through a hiring process to find a new superintendent. First, the board must determine if the current superintend is interested in the position. Second, the board must then determine if superintendent is interested if they would want to appoint or hire. Qualifications are: candidate must have been a superintendent for 3 years or an assistant superintendent for 3 years; a principal of an A or B rated school for three consecutive years or move up in accountability for three consecutive years. An Alternate process is available. An individual of leadership with an organization for 6 years could be eligible if they meet qualifications.
If the board decides to appoint a superintendent, the contracts are approved by the board attorney and then the superintendent signs papers and the process is over. If the board decides to go the interview process, there are three searches available: a Complete Search where Mississippi Department of Education handles most of the work for a fee including interviews and presents suggested candidates to board for hiring. The next option is Abridge search. Department of Education handles most of the process but not the stakeholder meeting within the neither district nor interviews of each candidate. The last search is Abbreviated search. The Department of Education does some of the work but the board is required to conduct interviews of each candidate, stake holder meetings, and the advertising of the position. (A flyer is attached for viewing).
At this time, the board has not moved forward with any decision until board president can meet with the current superintendent to see if he is interested in position. After meeting with the superintendent, the board president will report back to the board and a decision on how to move forward will then be determined.
