State Treasurer Lynn Fitch and Mississippi Children’s Museum
Partner to Celebrate 529 Day

A day to celebrate the importance of saving for college

Jackson, Miss. For the 5th year in a row, State Treasurer Lynn Fitch and the Mississippi
Children’s Museum (MCM) will partner to promote strategic ways children and families can
save for college.

On September 9, 2017, staff from both the Treasurer’s office and MCM will be stationed at the
Museum, helping children build their own coin banks and providing information to parents on
ways to sign up for a 529 college savings plan. In honor of this effort, admission to the Museum
on this day will be discounted for all guests to $5.29.

MCM President Susan Garrard notes, “We are very excited about our partnership with the
State Treasurer’s office in the crucially important work of preparing families and children for
college tuition costs. Everything we do is centered on providing and advocating for
opportunities for children in Mississippi. We know how critical access to higher education is in
determining life trajectories for our students and we appreciate the State recognizing us as a
principal partner in this effort.”

“With rising student loan debt in the headlines,” said Treasurer Lynn Fitch, “too many families
think that college is out of reach. But, with 529 plans, dreams of higher education can be
affordable for everyone. 529 Day at the Children’s Museum gives parents and children the
opportunity to learn more about building that foundation for their future in a fun, interactive
learning environment.”

September is National College Savings Month. College Savings Mississippi, a division of the
Office of the State Treasurer, will teach families the importance of saving for college early and
provide parents with information about Mississippi’s two 529 college savings plans, Mississippi
Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (MPACT) and Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS).
In addition, two lucky families will win $529 MACS scholarships.

MPACT is a prepaid tuition plan that allows families to protect against the future rise in college
tuition. MACS is a state-sponsored savings program that helps Mississippi families save for
future college expenses in addition to tuition, such as books, supplies, laptops, and certain
room and board expenses. Both plans may provide State and federal tax advantages.
