On Tuesday, January 15, Governor Bryant gave his final State of the State Address from the House Chamber of the Mississippi State Capitol. The annual Joint Session was gaveled to order by Speaker of the House Phillip Gunn and the session was presided over by Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves. Governor Bryant, who is not eligible to seek reelection due to term limits, challenged the legislature to send a bill to his desk that raises teacher pay in Mississippi. Bryant claimed he would sign it because teachers have made the biggest contribution to Mississippi’s future.
During the address, he Bryant touted many statistics and numbers that showed the progress Mississippi has made, such as the lowest unemployment in the state’s history. Bryant has left his mark on Mississippi politics in many other ways as well. Such as the appointment of Cindy Hyde-Smith to the United States Senate, Andy Gipson to Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, and Shad White to the State Auditor’s Office. All of which will be a large part of Governor Bryant’s legacy and the future of Mississippi. Only time will tell how Governor Bryant’s actions will be remembered in the minds of Mississippians.
