State Farm® Reports 2016 Mississippi Claim Numbers
Numbers show the importance of severe weather preparedness
February 21, 2017 – Jackson, MS – As the state of Mississippi takes times to observe Severe Weather Preparedness Week, the state’s largest home insurer has more than 4,000 reasons for homeowners to take it seriously. State Farm reports it paid 4,819 wind and hail related claims on structures across the state of Mississippi in 2016. Nationally, the company paid more than 363,000 wind and hail related claims on structures costing more than $3.6 billion. “We hope that sharing the actual numbers and costs of severe weather can be a motivator for homeowners to plan carefully and review their insurance coverage before severe weather season,” says State Farm spokesman Roszell Gadson.
Here are some basic preparations State Farm recommends:
Create an emergency kit with water, food, first aid, medications, radio, personal and insurance documents, key contact information, map, cash, extra clothing, sanitary supplies, basic tools, and pet supplies.
Make a plan and review it with members of your household, pick a safe place in your home where family members should gather during severe weather, make sure everyone knows were the emergency kit is stored, where evacuation and alternative evacuation are, and how and if utilities should be turned off. Make sure your pets are included in your evacuation plans.
Be informed – listen to your local radio and TV stations and visit www.Weather.com for updated storm information, be alert to changing weather conditions, and always err on the side of caution.
Make a complete video or photo inventory of your possessions for insurance purposes and keep these documents in a safe place (preferably not in your home or automobile).
Contact your insurance agent to review your policy – make sure that you understand what your policy covers and that you have adequate coverage.
