The University of Southern Mississippi will honor the contributions of its graduate students with a variety of activities during Graduate Student Appreciation Week April 3-7.

“The Graduate School is hosting this event to support our graduate students and show them how much we value their contributions to Southern Miss,” said Dr. Karen Coats, dean of the Southern Miss Graduate School. The exceptional work they produce has global impact. They transform their ideas and inquiry into new knowledge that often results in practical solutions to some of the world’s greatest problems.”

During the week, graduate students will have the opportunity to engage in activities that showcase their scholarship, research and creativity, enrich their education through professional development and foster interdisciplinary networking.

The week will kick-off with the Graduate Student Hall of Fame portrait unveiling and Open House, April 3, from 2-4 p.m. in the Graduate School, McCain Library, Second floor on the Hattiesburg campus.

Coats notes this is the week’s signature event. It showcases outstanding graduate students from each of the university’s academic colleges. Canvas portraits of the students, photographed in their research environment, will be displayed in the Office of the Graduate School for one year.

Professional development activities will include the Susan A. Siltanen Graduate Student Research Symposium, April 4, 9 a.m.-noon in the Thad Cochran Center and sessions to assist students in preparing theses and dissertations and applying for Fulbright U.S. Student Grant Program, among others workshops, will be held

The week will culminate with a meet and greet reception, April 7, 3-5 p.m. in the R.C. Cook Union Lounge with Dr. Justin Brown, senior scientist at Asuragen, a biotechnology company which focuses on development of new therapeutics and diagnostic tests in molecular oncology and genetics.

Brown will discuss how he has successfully navigated concerns in molecular science, manufacturing, business development, intellectual property, incoming market research, outgoing marketing, quality assurance, clinical affairs, and regulatory compliance. Brown received his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin where he studied cellular function of mRNA degradation and translational control.

The week’s events are being offered in partnership with Office of the Vice President for Research, Department of Biological Science, Cook Library, Honors College and Graduate Student Senate.
