The University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art and the Department of Art and Design will host “Make Your Mark: The Mississippi High Schools Juried Drawing Competition.” This competitive exhibition is open to all Mississippi high school juniors and seeks to recognize the creativity, artistic talent and drawing skills of students across the state.

An exhibition of the selected works will be displayed in the Gallery of Art and Design on the Hattiesburg campus throughout the summer of 2016.

Three cash prizes will be awarded: $300 for Best of Show, $200 for Second Place and $100 for Third Place. Additional non-cash Honorable Mention awards will also be presented. Award recipients will be announced on Sept.10 at the closing reception. The top three award winners will also each receive a $1,000 scholarship. All scholarships are contingent upon full-time enrollment as an art major in the Department of Art and Design at Southern Miss for the fall of 2017.

The competition is open to all high school juniors (to be seniors in the fall of 2016) currently enrolled and in good standing at any Mississippi public or private school. All entries must be original drawings made solely by the artist, and completed no more than two years prior to April 22. Artists may submit up to three drawings for a fee of $5. The entry deadline is April 22.

Drawings in the following media are eligible for entry: pencil, graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, black marker, ink wash and mixed media. Monochromatic works are encouraged. All forms of representational, abstract and non-representational drawings are eligible.

Entries submitted online by April 22 will be reviewed by a panel of professional artists and faculty in the Department of Art and Design. Up to 100 drawings will be selected for the gallery exhibition. Award winners will be selected from the actual works on display and announced at the closing reception on Sept. 10.
