For the fourth straight year, the Mississippi College softball and volleyball squads teamed up to collect canned goods and funds to provide Thanksgiving meals for families in need in Clinton.

“This effort would not be possible without the generosity of those in the Clinton community,” said head softball coach Brooke O’Hair. “I know both the MC Softball and Volleyball teams would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to those that gave selflessly this holiday season.”

Coach O’Hair, new MC Volleyball head coach Julie Redus and the Lady Choctaws went through the community service department at Mississippi College, headed up by Shari Barnes. They joined up with the Clinton Community Christian Corporation (The Four C’s) to help deliver the meals to families in need.

Overall, the team collected roughly enough food to help feed 28 families (150 people). The team distributed the meals to the families on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 22).

“I am so proud to have a group of athletes who like giving back to their community,” said Redus. “Service and community involvement are very near and dear to my heart and this team has really rallied to bring food to families who are in need. We partnered with Softball to try to meet the need of Clinton and get as many people involved as possible. It was a group effort and ultimately a humbling experience in which I hope my girls will take with them throughout this holiday season.”

“Helping out was a very humbling experience,” said junior Madison Kimes from the volleyball team. “We had the opportunity to provide more than 150 people with Thanksgiving food. It’s so easy to get caught up in MC’s bubble that we forget that others in our community are in need. Helping out was a good reminder that we need to give back to others in our community whenever we can.”

“The holidays are about family and we consider this community a part of our family,” said senior Lauren Mulligan from the softball team. “So it’s always a great feeling to give back and see the smiles we can put on the faces of the families we have the privilege of helping out.”

The MC volleyball team just wrapped up the 2016 campaign, posting double-digit victories for the first time in three years, while the softball team opens the 2017 season on February 4th in Gulf Shore, Ala. at the Gulf Shores Tournament.

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.

The athletic department sponsors 17 intercollegiate athletic programs: Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Football, Golf, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field, Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field and Volleyball.
