Friday night, August 25, 2017, Simpson Academy traveled to Leake Academy. The Cougars jumped out in front 6-0, and led at the end of the first quarter 14-7. The second quarter saw the Cougars blow the game open and led 51-26 at the half. Leake would score the only points in the third quarter cutting the Simpson lead to 51-32. The fourth quarter was won by the Cougars and the final score was Simpson 70, Leake 39.
Leading the Cougars offensively in the rushing game were Cook Weathersby with 11 carries for 175, a touchdown, and two 2 point conversion runs; Dylan Hallman with 15 rushes for 118 yards, three touchdowns,and a 2 point conversion run; Corbin Hosey 4 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown; Michael Winstead 6 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown; Ethan Flynt 8 rushes for 68 yards and a touchdown; Caleb Garner 8 carries for 53 yards and a 2 point conversion run; Hooks Harvey a touchdown and 2 PAT’s; and Mason Kennedy a touchdown. In the passing game Hunter Cline with 2 receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown, Bryce Caughman 2 receptions for 36 yards, and Ethan Flynt completed 4 passes for 102 yards. The Cougars were led defensively by Cole Weeks who was in on 7 tackles, Caleb Garner 6 tackles, and Michael Winstead, Tucker Varnes, and Corbin Hosey had 4 tackles. Daniel Pepper, Thomas Pepper, Tucker Varnes, and Corbin Hosey all had sacks for the Cougars. Zachary Ainsworth and Ethan Flynt each picked off a pass for Simpson. In team stats Simpson had 720 yards of total offense, 618 yards rushing, 102 yards passing, and picked up 34 first downs. Leake had 436 yards of total offense, 77 yards rushing, 359 yards passing, and picked up 21 first downs.
In Junior High action on Thursday the 7th and 8th grade lost 22- 6 to Jackson Academy and the Junior High lost 35-0.
The Cougars will travel to Oak Forest Academy in Amite, LA this Friday with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. This is the 14th time that the Yellow Jackets and Cougars have faced each other with the Cougars holding a 9-4 series advantage and have won the last four meetings. The Cougars last played Oak Forest in 2012 and won by a score of 15-14. The Junior High Cougars will be at home Thursday vs Leake Academy with the 7th and 8th grade game at 5:30 p.m. and the Junior High game at 6:45 p.m.
