The Simpson Academy Cougars concluded their 2015 regular season against the Rebels of Adams Christian. The Rebels prevailed by a score of 32-27. Adams finished the season undefeated and District Champions, while the Cougars finished with an 8-2 record and a 3rd place finish in the district.

The Cougars had every opportunity to win the ballgame. In fact the Cougars had the Rebels reeling through most of the ballgames. Unfortunately, the Cougars were also in a giving mood. Three turnovers and multiple other times when the Cougars let the ball hit the turf, sealed their fate on the night.

In the two losses for Simpson, the Cougars turned the ball over 6 times while their opponents (Adams and Cathedral) did not turn the ball over once. A turnover deficit such as that, makes it difficult to defeat good teams, no matter how well you play.

The two teams went back and forth throughout the entire first half. The Cougars scored the opening points of the ball game, when Kyle Burney scored on a 4 yard touchdown with 33 seconds left in the first quarter. The extra point was no good.

Adams answered the Cougars score with a touchdown of their own. The Rebels extra point was no good, thanks to a block by Triston Cowan. Cowan blocked two extra points during the game.

The Cougars answered back, this time Kyle Burney broke one loose for 69 yards to put the Cougars back on top. Scott Johnson’s extra point was good and the Cougars led by a score of 13-6.

Two minutes later, Adams answered with their second touchdown of the night. The Rebels went for two on the extra try and were successful. The Rebels led at halftime by a score of 14-13.

Adams wasted little time at the start of the second half, scoring on a 30 yard pass play. They attempted another two point conversion, this one was unsuccessful. The Cougars and Cowan answered right back. The Cougars tied the game after a 32 yard run by Cowan and the extra point by Johnson.

The Rebels would score the next two touchdowns. Three minutes separated the two scores, but both were 13 yard touchdown passes to the same corner of the end zone but to two separate receivers. A well thrown ball and equally good catches allowed the Rebels to stretch their lead to 32-20.

The Cougars would answer again in the fourth quarter when Landon Herrington ran up the middle for 7 yards and to close the gap to 32-27.

The Cougars would come close to scoring two more times. The first was when a long run, deep into Rebel territory, was called back due to a penalty. The Cougars again were deep into Rebel territory, the 7 yard line to be exact. But negative plays and penalties prevented the Cougars from reaching the end zone.

The final score of the ballgame was 32-27 and with that, the Rebels secured the number one seed in the playoffs, while the Cougars were given a six seed. The Cougars will host the Green Wave from North Delta. The Green Wave finished the regular season with a record of 7-3, 3-2 in their District. The winner of this game will face the winner of the Starkville Academy (#3 seed) and Lee Academy (#14 seed) game.

The opening round of the playoffs is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Mendenhall campus of Simpson Academy.
