Simpson County Technical Center recently held its Reality Fair. Students had the unique opportunity to experience some of the financial challenges they will face when they start life on their own. This hands-on experience helped identify their career choice and starting salaries then they completed a budget sheet requiring them to live within their monthly salary while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food. Additional expenditures such as entertainment and travel were factored in as well. Throughout the fair, there were many temptations for additional spending, and students learned to balance their wants and needs to live on their own. Community participants included Todd Booth, Mayor of Mendenhall, Don O’Harroll from State Farm, Representatives from People’s Bank, C Spire, & Priority One, Dr. Shenika Kendricks from Mississippi State University, Pam Wallace, Director of Outreach at Magee General Hospital & Reginald Castillo, Upward Bound DirectorWe appreciate these professionals for taking time out of their work schedules to offer financially sound advice and tips for students to consider when they enter adulthood.  Kenyatta Durr, Health Informatics Instructor & Joe Ann Floyd, Student Services Coordinator planned and coordinated this event to guide students as they embark upon their career path.  Thanks so much to Colin for allowing the use of their facilities to hold this event!
