Simpson County School Board met Thursday, December 8, 2002 for their regular scheduled meeting. Several recognition and honors were observed during the evening.
The following Innovative Teacher Awards for December 2022 were recognized at the meeting.
- Robert Wallace–Mendenhall High
- Katelyn Foster–Mendenhall High
- Jordan Faler–Magee Elementary
- Leslie May–Magee Elementary
- Amanda Housley–Mendenhall Jr High
All minutes, consent agenda and finances presented to the board were approved.
Mendenhall High School Football team and coaches were honored for their achievement as South State 4A Champions and playing in the State Championship game in Hattiesburg. The Tigers ended their season with a 13-2 record and State Runner Up in Class 4A.
Board President Danny Cowart advised the public the board had toured the facilities at Mendenhall Elementary, Jr. High, and High School earlier that day.
The board acknowledged Board Member Patrice Boykin for her years of dedication serving on the board. Each board member made comments concerning her tender. Ms. Boykin had a 100% attendance during her term. A reception was held prior to the meeting.
The board was honored by the Mississippi School Boards Association as being a Board of Merit. The board is pictured below with the certificate they were presented.

The board approved the retirement of Gwynn James effective 12/30/22.
The following candidates recommended for employment were approved.
· Yolanda Walker – ELA Teacher Mendenhall High School
· Misty Mohr CTE Family & Consumer Science – Mendenhall High School
· Tiffany Juarez – English II Mendenhall School
· Shelia Burbridge – Interim Principal – Magee High School
A motion was made to suspend board policy BCAF. This policy allows public speaking but does not allow the board to make any comments when someone speaks. Policies BCBI, BCAE, and KLR does allow public comment and board interaction. A discussion was held about suspending the policy. Board members Boykin and Herrin wanted to see an explained version of how public comments will work before suspending the one in place. The board advised there would be a detailed explanation of how the comment section would work by the next board meeting. They voted on suspending the policy BCAF passed with a 3-2 vote. Herrin and Boykin opposing.
The district will conduct a table top exercise program on Monday, December 19, 2002. School officials will meet with all the local emergency personnel concerning safety protocols for the county schools.
