Dr. Jane Hulon, representatives, and staff from Copiah Lincoln Community College met before the Simpson County Board of Supervisors Tuesday, September 4, 2018 to update the board on the college. Dr. Hulon is the new President of Copiah Lincoln Community College. She is the 8th President and has worked for Co-Lin 16 years. Dr. Hulon said it was a privilege to serve as President of Copiah Lincoln Community College. Dr. Hulon stated, “student enrollment numbers were up just a tick.” Simpson County has approximately 400 students from the county attending Co-Lin Simpson and Wesson campuses. The vocational building at Simpson Campus will be under construction soon. The Construction bid was awarded to Richard Womack. A new women’s resident hall is being built at the Wesson Campus. The name of the new building will be Nettles Hall.
Judge Jeff Weill, candidate for the Mississippi Court of Appeals 4th District, appeared before the board acknowledging his candidacy.
Dale Berry, Magee Mayor, asked the board for a meeting to be held Friday, September 4, 2018. The Circuit Clerk’s office is still in the process of verifying required signatures for the liquor amendment to be added to the November election. If enough signatures are verified by Friday, the board will approve at that time to add the request for legalized liquor in Simpson County to the November ballot. 1,500 verified signatures are required for placement on the November 6th ballot.
The board approved Election Commissioners to attend the ECAM conference January 23-25, 2019 in Philadelphia, MS and Charles Baldwin to attend the Mississippi State University IAAO workshop October 22-26, 2018, in Natchez, MS. The board approved the renewal membership in the Mississippi Association of Extension 4-H Agents for Amanda Blakeney in the amount of $100.00. A Utility permit application was approved to bore under 1243 County Road 472 for Boggan Ridge Water Association. In a 4-1 vote, approval was given to bury a dead horse at 131 Fount Drive, Mendenhall, MS.
Discussion was held on how the money approved under house Bill 1 would be budgeted. County Administrator, Rhuel Dickerson stated to the best of his knowledge it appears the money would not come at one time but rather phased in over time, with ¼ the first year, 50% second year, 75% third and 100% fourth. The present board will most likely not see the results of the money from House Bill 1. The next elected board should see the benefits of House Bill 1.
With no further business, the meeting was recessed until Friday, September 7, 2018 at 9:00 am.
