It’s back to school time. While most people rightly think about elementary students with much needed school supply drives, one local organization is focusing on college bound students.
The Simpson County Alcorn Alumni Association is gearing up for their scholarship gala. The gala will be held on Saturday, August 10th, 2024 at the National Guard Armory on Park Street in Mendenhall.
“The Simpson County Alumni chapter takes pride in sending phenomenal students from Simpson County to Alcorn State University,” said Alcorn State University’s Newly-elected National Parliamentarian and Simpson County Alumni Chapter President Sandrena Durr.
The guest speaker for the event is Simpson County Native, Journalist, Children’s Author and Nonprofit Founder Katina Rankin.

“I was able to exceed in my career with GOD and with the foundation that continued from Magee High School to Alcorn State University. I am happy to support Simpson County students who demonstrate a financial need. And, your support of this scholarship event will help grant students an education and a future filled with possibilities. I hope to see you there,” said Simpson County Native Katina Rankin.
Two Simpson County Alcornites with notable positions in Simpson County will be announced that evening.  The emcee for the event is CEO of Climbing Higher Heights, LLC and Education Consultant Jamia Dock. Dock is a graduate of Alcorn State University.

All proceeds will be used as scholarship dollars for deserving students going to Alcorn State University.
“Whether you attended Alcorn, know a student that’s going, or just want to give back to help a Simpson Countian excel to the next level — consider buying a very affordable ticket. Let’s show our neighbors we care about our next group of leaders,” said Rankin. “Prayerfully, I will inspire not just our young adults but our seasoned citizens to keep striving for greatness to improve our community, our cities, and our county.”
“We’re excited about the gala. More importantly, we’re elated to provide scholarships each year to each student who chooses to attend Alcorn,” said Durr.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Chapter Member Laura Stewart at  (601) 867-1673. Or, you can simply buy your $25 ticket from chapter members or through cashapp at $LauraStewart67.
