Severe Summer Blood Shortage

There is a critical need for blood. Summer time traditionally sees a drop in blood donations and it has been worse than normal in 2016. There has been a steep decline in donations and the blood reserves are looking thin. In order to cover the requirements of patients suffering from trauma, serious illness and major surgery, blood needs to be available prior to their need. Mississippi Blood Services (MBS) is now at an extremely low inventory and is asking donors to come in and roll up their sleeves to help boost the blood supply. We need all blood types to come in and donate whole blood, double red cells and platelets.
Please visit msblood.com to locate a blood drive near you, or download the free MBS App on your phone or tablet. MBS will be holding a drive in your area within the next ten days, or so; or you can come by any of the MBS Draw Stations! Hours of operation are listed on the MBS Web site.
Most patients needing blood do not have the luxury of time. The time to donate is before it is needed—but every day patients throughout Mississippi and the surrounding area need blood products. MBS wants to remind donors that there is a two day processing time between the donation and when blood can be released for transfusion.
Yes, it’s hot outside. Maybe you’re a long time donor who has put off donating because of the heat or maybe you’ve never donated blood before and are thinking this is not the time to start; however this is the very time we need you. Your donation can literally mean the difference between life and death for someone else. There is no substitute for human blood. Patients are counting on healthy individuals like you to share the gift of life by donating blood—and many of them don’t even know it yet.
Donating blood is safe, simple and it saves lives. Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with signed parental consent, visit our Web site for a copy of the form), weigh at least 110 pounds and have a valid ID. Visit us at msblood.com or call us at (888) 90-BLOOD (902-5663) for more information. You can also visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/give2live and follow MSbloodservices on Twitter. To keep up with when we will be in your area, please download the free MBS App to phone or tablet.
