September is Alzheimer’s Awareness month with the 21st of the month being Alzheimer’s day. Magee General Hospital remembered Alzheimer’s day on Friday, the 18th. Employees from all departments turned out wearing their purple for this cause. ALZHEIMER’S – a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease but I have always believed it is worse on the family or caretaker.
There are 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s:
- MEMORY LOSS THAT CORRUPTS DAILY LIFE
- CHALLENGES IN PLANNING OR SOLVING PROBLEMS
- DIFFICULTY COMPLETING FAMILIAR TASKS AT HOME, WORK, OR AT LEISURE
- CONFUSION WITH TIME OR PLACE
- TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING VISUAL IMAGES AND SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS
- NEW PROBLEMS WITH WORDS IN SPEAKING OR WRITING
- MISPLACING THINGS AND LOSING THE ABILITY TO RETRACE STEPS
- DECREASED OR POOR JUDGEMENT
- WITHDRAWAL FROM WORK OR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
- CHANGES IN MOOD OR PERSONALITY
