JACKSON – The Mississippi Senate today unanimously elected Sen. Terry Burton as Senate President Pro Tempore.
“Sen. Burton brings extensive legislative experience to the position as my top lieutenant, and I appreciate the Senate’s actions today,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said. “I value his insight into the needs of Mississippi’s communities and his strong conservative leadership.
In the position, the Republican from Newton will preside over the Senate in the absence of the lieutenant governor and serves as chairman of the Rules Committee, which manages operations of the chamber. The President Pro Tem serves as Acting Governor when the Governor and Lieutenant Governor are out of state.
“I have been privileged to represent District 31 in this esteemed body, and I am honored to be chosen by my colleagues to this position,” Sen. Burton said. “Together, the state Senate will continue to represent the interests of Mississippians and work toward building a prosperous future.”
For 25 years, Sen. Burton has represented District 31, which serves Lauderdale, Newton and Scott counties. In the past four years, he served as chairman of the energy committee and vice chairman of both appropriations, and universities and colleges committees. His tenure also has included leadership positions on healthcare and Medicaid committees. As a former mayor, Sen. Burton also has experience dealing with the challenges of local communities.
Sen. Burton and his wife, the former Darleen Allday, live in Newton. They have two children, four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Senator Burton is a York Rite Mason and a Shriner. He is a member of the MS Home Corporation Oversight, State Workforce Investment Board, Facilities Management Advisory Committee, Medical Care Advisory Committee, the Rotary, Newton Booster Club and the Newton Chamber of Commerce.

Senator Burton was born in Philadelphia, MS on January 31, 1956. He is married to the former Darleen Allday; they have two children and two granddaughters. His religious affiliation is United Methodist.
