SCSD Students Compete in Districtwide Reading Fair
From Charlotte’s Web, to Goosebumps, and George Washington Our 1st President, students had a wonderful time showcasing their favorite books at the Simpson County School District (SCSD) Reading Fair — the first reading fair to be held by the district since 2018.
On Nov. 15, more than 60 students from across the district gathered at the Magee Elementary School Gymnasium to participate in the SCSD Reading Fair and to showcase their favorite book. Students presented on a fictional, nonfiction narrative, or informational book by way of storyboard or digital media display to be observed by a group of judges. The students were able to complete the projects individually, in a group, or with the help of family.
“After five years, we are so excited to reintroduce the reading fair to our students on a district and schoolwide level,” said Stephanie Hubbard, English Language Arts Instructional Coach and reading fair coordinator. “The reading fair is an opportunity for our students to share their love of reading and also learn some critical thinking skills.
In October, SCSD schools began hosting school-level reading fairs on their campuses for students to present their storyboard or digital media display and compete against their classmates. Students who won first, second or third place were then chosen to advance to the district reading fair to compete against their peers from across the district. Between the school-level and district fair, students were allowed to make adjustments to their storyboards, based on judges’ comments, to improve their chances of winning on the district level.
“The librarians and I were excited to see parents and students enjoying the creativity of others and how each student expressed their creativity about their favorite book,” said Hubbard. “We are looking forward to having more students and projects in the future.”
