Dr. Derricka Thomas, Director of Child Nutrition for Simpson County School District, is the recent recipient of a competitive scholarship awarded to industry professionals who advocate for the education, safety and nutrition needs of students and child nutrition programs across the country.

Awarded the School Nutrition Foundation 2024 Jack Maas Jr. LAC Scholarship, Thomas received a $1,000 scholarship to attend the School Nutrition Association’s Legislative Action Conference (LAC) to be held in Washington, D.C., in March. The scholarship was made possible through the generous support of the J.T.M. Food Group to inspire school nutrition professionals to become vocal advocates for child nutrition and to take part in professional development that will help school nutrition programs be successful.

The LAC is one of the School Nutrition Association’s most highly anticipated and informative events, allowing attendees to experience firsthand the inner workings of the democratic process, to learn about current legislative and regulatory challenges facing school nutrition, and to advocate directly with their legislators.

“Attendance at the Legislative Action Conference will empower professionals to advocate for school nutrition more effectively, and the current climate is ideal for amplifying our voices in support of our program and school nutrition policies, making my participation in LAC a worthwhile investment,” said Thomas. “I hope everyone shares my enthusiasm for the enduring benefits it promises to bring to our school nutrition program.”

Dr. Derricka Thomas is a veteran educator with more than 25 years of experience as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, district-level administrator, and adjunct professor. She has been an employee of Simpson County School District since 2016 and has served in the role of child nutrition director for the past four years.
