School Board Meeting Recap for 9/10/2020

The Simpson County School Board met Thursday, September 10, 2002, for their regular scheduled meeting. All board members were present.

 

Minutes from the previous month’s board meeting were approved.

The board approved to accept a donation of $200 from Legacy Church for student school meals. Magee High School was given permission to accept a donation from Woodmen of the World and Computer Innovations for two chrome books.

 

Judith Jones, new Director of COVID-19 nurse, introduced herself and spoke to the board concerning Covid-19 numbers and children showing positive cases within the state.

 

The board approved to accept a donation from Vowell’s in Mendenhall for canned goods of fruits. Mrs. Joanna Maddox, Director of Child Nutrition, spoke with state office to make sure these goods could be accepted. The state office gave permission to accept the donated items.

 

Maddox advised the board the Simpson County School District has been awarded a waiver through USDA to operate the Summer Food Service Program through December 2020. Breakfast and lunch will be served FREE of charge to ALL students enrolled in the district! These Free meals will continue through December 2020 or until funds run out.

Maintenance Superintendent Jeffery Walker advised the field house at Magee was completed. Final inspection of property will happen this week and any finding will be completed immediately. A ribbon cutting is scheduled in the coming weeks.

 

Superintendent Greg Paes noted that the district is down 291 students from this time last year. Paes also addressed the issue of the Magee football team.  One athlete tested positive for COVID-19 resulting in approximately 77 students being placed in quarantine for safety protocol.

 

Director of Finance Duane Fewell presented the finances and the board approved all reports.

 

The meeting was adjourned to go into executive session to discuss a personnel issue.

 

The next regular scheduled board meeting is October 8, 2020 at 3:00 PM.
