School Board Meeting Entertained with Singing and Dancing

Simpson County School Board was entertained with singing and dancing by the Magee Elementary Show Choir during their meeting Thursday, April 13, 2023.

The group pulled off a great performance with  limited space available for their singing, dancing, and moving within the area.

In February, the Show Choir along with Director Tammy Sanford won first place in the Elementary Division of the 2023 Petal High School Show Choir Invitational.

The group performed their opening act to the song Celebration.

After the outstanding performance Director Tammy Sanford was honored for her and her students accomplishment in music. Mrs. Sanford was acknowledged and presented a certificated by the District.

Hunting and fishing bids for 16th Section land were opened. Mr. Tom McAlpin will check all bids and present them to the board at the next meeting for approval.

All minutes, agenda, and finances were approved by the board.

New board attorney John Hooks was introduced to the public. Hooks is formally from Mendenhall and represents  Adams and Reece LLC.

Megan St. Clair with St. Clair CPA, PLLC met before the board to discuss audit finding for 2022. Only two items were discovered. One was a repeat from previous year on garnishments but as to date the problem has been resolved and corrected and will not show on the next audit. 2nd finding came from 16th section revenue. The district did not issue a check in a refund. The problem has been correct and check issued. Everything else in the audit looked good.

The following consent agenda was approved.

Request permission to advertise for bids on timber sales on 16-1Ν-6Ε, 78 acres and 16-1Ν-4Ε, 148 acres. Both are final clear cut sales.

Illegal dumping on Section 16-F2N-R1E in Old Pearl. Several piles of debris have blocked one of the roads into the section. Request permission to ask the County to clean-up to allow for access

Request to accept bid proposals for Apple and Promettiean branded products

Request for Brenda White and Joe Ann Floyd and twelve (12) students to attend HOSA competition, June 20-25, 2023 in Dallas, TX

Request to allow Coach Cyril Fisher and six (6) students from Mendenhall High School to participate in the National Archery Tournament, May 10-14, 2023 in Louisville, KY.

The following HR report was approved:

The following classified recommendations were approved.

CLASSIFIED STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR

A discuss was held concerning safety resources officers. Dr. Holloway advised he had spoke with Sheriff Paul Mullins regarding adding one officer at Magee and one office at Mendenhall for the next upcoming year. Simpson Central already has an officer assigned to their area. More details concerning these additions will be discussed at a later time.

Plans are to add fencing around the Magee School for safety. Dr. Holloway and Jeffery Walker have been doing walk throughs at each school concerning maintenance issues.

Construction updates:  All jobs are on are schedule at this time. Mendenhall 5th grade building is seeing progression. The cafeteria project at Mendenhall High School is underway and Simpson Central crews are working everyday. No change plans have been submitted on any projects.
