The Simpson County School Board welcomed Peoples Bank employees to the June 8, 2023 Board Meeting. Shannon Welch, representing PeoplesBank, presented four students with the ACT Most Growth Award and a check.

Students receiving the award:   Carson Harper from Magee High School, Edmya Turner from Magee High School, Landon McKinnie from Mendenhall High School and Jackaline Sills from Mendenhall High School.

Stacey Chaplin with the Community Engagement Council updated the board on the changes to the committee. The previous name of the committee was the P-16 Council. Due to new guide lines, the Simpson County Council met January 10, 2023 to revamp the council. The new guidelines was distributed to those in attendance, along with interest forms for those interested in participating on the council and nominations forms to nominate person for the officers of this council. Based on the guidance, bylaws for this council were drafted and made available to those in attendance.

Chair is Stacey Chapin, vice-Chair Gloria Johnson, Secretary – Pam Parish, and Communication Liaison Latoya Banks. The key issue noted from the committee was attendance for the district. The committee hopes to assist the district in encouraging students to attend school.

The following board policies were reviewed and approved by the Board.

  • BCAE:  Public Hearings
  • BCBI: Public Participation at Board Meetings
  • KL-R: Public comments
  • DJC – Payroll Procedures
  • DJCA – Pay Day Schedule
  • DJEJ: Payment Procedures
  • GCD: Classified Personnel Hiring
  • GCRG – Absence from Duty Classified Staff

The following consent agenda was approved:

A. Permission to dispose of fixed assets for the month of May 2023

B. Request approval of “Clear Bag Policy” at all SCSD school events beginning with the 2023-2024 school year.

C. Request to add middle school Volleyball for SCSD pending approval MHSAA approval.

D. Approval of the following handbooks for the 2023-2024 school year.

  • Kindergarten – 8th grade
  • 9th – 12th grade
  • Substitute Employee handbook
  • Classified handbook
  • Certified employee handbook

E. Approval of Federal Programs Title Assurances for 2023-2024

F. Contracts, Terms, of Agreements & Mou’s

  • Canopy Children’s Solutions
  • Ms Dept of Voc Rehab/Voc Reh for the Blind
  • USM Dubard School for Language (Revised)
  • Talk Time Therapeutics
  • Battelle for Kids – Strategic Planning

All Finances, minutes, and claims dockets were approved.

Maintenance Director Jeffery Walker presented an update on all  constructions projects.

The 5th grade building at Mendenhall Elementary is scheduled for completion at the end of June  or first of July. The project is on track for the date. The Mendenhall Cafeteria Project is scheduled for completion the end of July. Simpson Central project should be completed by August 31, 2023.

The following Human Resource report was approved.

Attached is the coaches supplement for 2023 – 2024.

The meeting entered executive session to discuss Hardship Waivers, Prospective purchase, sale or leasing of land, personnel matters relating to a person in a specific position.
